A native of Grimstad in southern Norway, Gro Myhren Værnes joined the Oslo Gospel Choir (OGC) in 1996. While studying music at an Oslo bible school, she met OGC founder Tore Aas. One audition led to Gro’s permanent membership in the choir’s alto section.
Music and especially singing have been important in Gro’s life since she was very young; she has sung in a variety of ministry choirs, as well as being actively involved in choirs for children and youth. Never one to limit herself, Gro has also been involved in soul and pop bands, and has performed backing vocals for artists such as Swedish star Carola, Christian Ingebrigtsen (of A1 fame), 2009’s Eurovision sensation Alexander Rybak and Norwegian acts Dance with a Stranger and Di Derre.
Gro and her husband now live in Oslo, where she is a pedagogical manager and teacher at Marienlyst Gård pre-school and kindergarten. She regularly uses music and other creative methods to help the school’s youngest students develop language, vocabulary and communication skills. She has also participated as a praise and worship leader for several years. Gro brings her passion for life to everything she does, including the OGC. "I love the opportunity of singing together in the choir and at the same time sharing my beliefs,” she says. ”I have been so fortunate to be able to do this together with the amazing ‘gang’ in Oslo Gospel Choir for so many years!”
